“Oh, my goodness, that was so much fun!” Samantha’s face was alive with color. I slid my arm around her waist as we stepped down from the Iron Shark Rollercoaster. The boardwalk was teeming with people and we walked along it slowly. I quickly found myself lost in thought.

My life isn’t dominated by superstitious behaviors; however, I am not immune to them. For someone who has played a lot of sports, it’s inevitable. You end up repeatedly doing those things you think bring you luck: kissing a medallion; listening to a particular song; or, a quick prayer before the big game.

By the same token, if you suspect in the slightest that something is bad luck, you get rid of it. Or you change it. Or you redirect it. Fast. The competitive nature of sports requires quick action.

Sometimes, it’s your gut that is telling you something is right or wrong—an innate impulse or guidance system. Instinct. Your instincts can be like this confusing, gray area between superstition and the subconscious. I’ve seen people win and lose when they followed their instincts.

But, I trusted mine. And they were telling me something was wrong.

“Jack?” Samantha was looking up at me expectantly.

“Sorry…did I miss something? I was zoning out a little bit.”

“I just asked if you wanted to ride the rollercoaster again,” she replied.

“No…” I couldn’t stop my brows from furrowing or a small frown from tugging the corners of my mouth downward. My insides started to ache a little bit.

“Are you okay?” I could see the concern in Samantha’s eyes.

“I just have a strange feeling,” I told her. I didn’t want to raise an alarm just because I had a feeling. “Let’s call my parents and check on Jake.”

“Okay.” The quizzical look on Samantha’s face might have struck me as funny another time.

I pulled my cell phone from my pocket and hit dial on the contact labeled Billy & Lainey.
